Sakarun

Sakarun is one of the most popular beaches on the Adriatic. It lies on the northern part of Dugi otok, yet faces southeast. It is surrounded by a pine forest, in the central part of which there is a large car park, and in front it continues into a bay some three hundred metres wide and about a kilometre long. It is graced by beautiful, perfectly clear turquoise sea and is one of the most visited beaches, both by tourists arriving from the mainland and by boaters who anchor here to enjoy the paradisiacal atmosphere. The bay somewhat resembles Palmižana on St. Clement (Paklinjaci), but it is larger and again quite different in its own way.

My wife had a complaint that it was too big for her and that she doesn’t like “too many people”. Although there were quite a few people, the beach is large and each individual could claim at least ten square metres just for themselves.
Some don’t like it, because the surroundings are neglected; others don’t like that besides sand there is also shingle; a third group is put off by the drifts of seagrass (posidonia) on the beach; and a fourth by the rubbish that the sea washes in outside the season. Many would gladly see the bay without the vessels that anchor beyond the swimming line, probably at least 200 m from the beach.

Although far from perfect, Sakarun is a beach that leaves an impression and is certainly worth a visit.

Although I am not a fan of sand and shallows, I personally liked it very much. It gives a feeling of warmth, as if in some exotic lagoon. The depth increases relatively quickly to one sufficient for swimming, and the boats are quite far away, too far to bother or annoy. The seabed is covered with white sand, with occasional smaller patches of seagrass.

On the beach there is a surface for every taste. If you want shingle, it is a little further from the sea, closer to the pine forest. By the sea there is sand, and on the sides of the bay there are rocks.

Sakarun is anything but just another beach in a row. There is always something to be found that isn’t to someone’s liking, but that in no way diminishes the uniqueness and beauty of Sakarun!
