In the very heart of Šibenik-Knin County stands a mountain that dominates the entire region. South of Knin and north of Drniš, Promina captivates the eye even from afar, and if you often pass through this region, it is only a matter of time before you give in and answer its call.

Promina

It is assumed to have taken its name from the ancient Illyrian settlement of Promona, which the Romans conquered as far back as 34 BC. It is incredible how great the value of the toponyms scattered on all sides is — toponyms that preserve fragments of information about long-forgotten places, people and events.

Although we could not put Promina on the list of the more beautiful locations, it certainly has its charms and peculiarities. One of them is undoubtedly its geology.

Promina

All along the way we came across various rocks of strange composition, and we were also struck by a large stone slab on the way to the mountain lodge. People have used it as a substitute for asphalt and formed part of the road with it. When you reach it, it will bring plenty of delight to children and adults alike!

Promina

Although the lodge can be reached by car, the recommendation is to leave the car lower down and continue on along the hiking trail. Along the way you will come across springs, interesting rock formations and the odd other surprise.

The lodge is decently appointed. In front of it lies a spacious meadow, on the eastern part of which arbours have been built, where you can rest and have a marenda in the shade. From the spot where we parked to the lodge is some 1.7 km and 240 m of elevation gain.

From there we set off towards the highest peak, Čavnovka (1,148 m). A gravel road leads to the summit, so you can reach the top by car too, but the more interesting option is the shorter hiking trail, which through the forest on the eastern side brings you out at a junction of trails to the north.

Promina
We used the road that leads to the summit for the descent on the way back.

The summit itself leaves a mixed impression. The spectacular views in all directions are spoiled by the presence of military installations, barbed wire and transmitters.
