Bunari Rajčica

Between the villages of Nisko and Postinje Donje, in the heart of the Dalmatinska zagora, lie Bunari Rajčica. This hydrological site, set in a natural depression known as Niščanski gaj, hides ten wells surrounding a large pond.

The pond and the wells have been used since ancient times to water livestock. Although sites like this are not rare in the Dalmatinska zagora, this one was restored a few years ago and put to use for tourism, and as such now shines in full splendour. Exactly when the wells were built is not known. Some also call them the Roman Wells, but it is more likely they were created sometime during the Middle Ages.

It is also interesting that the site lies on the route of Via Adriatica, a 1100 km long trail that runs along the entire Croatian coast of the Adriatic Sea.

How to get to Bunari Rajčica?

We came by car from the direction of Brštanovo, and the last 3 km of the road is a gravel track of decent quality. You can leave the car right at the start of the trail. The trail to the wells is 200 m long, well marked, easy and very passable. Info boards are set up at the beginning and at the end.

Bunari Rajčica is an excellent spot both for a short walk and for a longer outing with friends around a barbecue!

When you reach the wells, on the right-hand side there is a landscaped picnic area with benches and a barbecue. If you bring food to grill, the location is nicely suited for a half-day outing. Be careful with children. Don’t let them onto the meadow unsupervised — these are, after all, wells you can easily fall into but rather harder to climb out of. Also, the piles of grass-overgrown rocks are ideal hiding places for snakes, so that is something else to keep in mind.
