The Green Cathedral

In Donji Prološac, besides the “usual” church, there is also one whose concept stands apart from any other sacred building we have seen. This is the Zelena katedrala (the “Green Cathedral”), which consists of an entrance arch and a row of side columns ending in a stone altar. The whole structure is open, without walls or a roof, set among the greenery from which it took its name.
The structure is an architectural work by Edo Šegvić, and its construction was completed in 1995. Parts of the structure have directional floor lighting, so it is surely an attractive sight at night as well. The idea is original, and it is particularly interesting in these pandemic times, when crowds in enclosed spaces are being avoided.
On summer days the tree canopies provide shade, and the Vrljika river that flows right alongside adds to the pleasant atmosphere.
The Zelena katedrala is most visited on the feast of the Assumption (Velika Gospa), when people from the entire Imotska krajina come to it.
It is an unusual and very pleasant place, well worth a stop if you are in this region, which otherwise abounds in many natural attractions.
