Orsula
One of the best views of Dubrovnik

One of the most beautiful views of Dubrovnik and its waters is from Orsula. This prominent position, 200 m above sea level, spreads across the slopes just below the Adriatic Highway that leads from Dubrovnik toward the far south of Croatia. The spacious pull-off area is easily accessible and located at the junction of the highway and the road leading out of the city.

The location was named after the Church of St. Ursula, built in the mid-14th century by the noblewoman Tolija Silvestro.

Once a neglected site, not so long ago, through the enthusiasm of a civic initiative, it was cleared and transformed into today’s Park Orsula—an archaeological site, a panoramic viewpoint, and the most beautiful summer stage in the world, hosting numerous concerts and festivals. As part of the project, an amphitheater with about 350 seats was created, perfectly integrated into the Mediterranean landscape and offering spectacular views.

In addition to the amphitheater, the aforementioned Church of St. Ursula was also restored. It was built in memory of all the abused girls who chose to end their suffering by jumping into the abyss at this very spot.

A hermit’s dwelling was also established here in the 15th century, and records mention that the first hermit was Luka from the island of Crete.

This position has always held a prominent place throughout history. It represented the edge of the urban area and the last safe point from Dubrovnik toward the south. The caravan route passed through here, and from this point, travelers from the east caught their first glimpse of Dubrovnik.

Orsula is certainly a place worth stopping for, not only for its beauty and incredible view but primarily to feel the spirit of a bygone era that completes the understanding of the grandeur and significance of Dubrovnik as part of the world’s heritage.
