Lake Dubrava – the largest artificial lake in Croatia
With a surface area of over 17 km2, Lake Dubrava (Dubravsko jezero) is the largest artificial lake in Croatia, and the second largest lake of any kind after Vransko jezero. It is a reservoir on the river Drava used by the Dubrava hydroelectric power plant. It takes its name from the village of Donja Dubrava, which lies just downstream of the plant.

It has a regular shape, is about 9 km long and around 1.7 km wide. It is the largest in a chain of similar lakes around Varaždin that feed the hydroelectric plants.

It is impossible to miss, because its impressive embankment runs the whole length of the main road that leads to Varaždin from the east. A beautiful avenue of trees has been planted along the road, so the whole scene is exceptionally attractive!

An asphalt path has been laid along the top of the embankment, good for cycling, running, or simply getting to a convenient fishing spot.

The lake is more accessible on its western side, near the town of Prelog, because the embankment there is considerably lower and the lie of the land has allowed a holiday-home settlement, a marina and a small sports airfield to grow up.

Special
Although our focus is on Croatia, due to great interest in reviewing some international locations from our travels, we decided to launch the Special section. In it, we will not cover locations in the same detailed way we do with Croatian ones, but will instead provide a brief overview of multiple locations grouped into meaningful categories. The only criterion we still strictly follow is that they must be natural attractions.
