Kubus (Ura)

On the road that crosses the Velebit from Gospić towards Karlobag, a couple of kilometres past Baške Oštarije, you come to a point with a magnificent view out to sea – Karlobag, the island of Pag and the whole Velebit Channel. Besides the view of the sea, the one inland is just as beautiful and interesting. Dressed in forests, pastures and mountain peaks, it will leave every passer-by lost for words.
This is a place of incredible beauty. A magic that brings together sea and mountain sets the bar for beauty so high that many far more famous destinations around the world would struggle to reach it.
This spot, also known as Oštarijsko sedlo or Stara vrata, is a favourite stop for every traveller on the way to the sea and back. Not far from the road, at 927 m above sea level, a monument to the building of the Karlobag – Gospić road was erected in 1846, the so-called Kubus (Ura). A flight of 33 steps leads up to it.

Special
Although our focus is on Croatia, due to great interest in reviewing some international locations from our travels, we decided to launch the Special section. In it, we will not cover locations in the same detailed way we do with Croatian ones, but will instead provide a brief overview of multiple locations grouped into meaningful categories. The only criterion we still strictly follow is that they must be natural attractions.
