Kličevica Fortress

If, on the motorway in the hinterland of Biograd, you spot some kind of tower hidden in a canyon on the Benkovac side, it is Kličevica. It was built in 1454 and served to protect the strategic trade route to the Ravni kotari region and the mills on the river below it.

The fortress is easiest to approach from the northwest. If you want a slightly longer walk, you can leave your car by the last houses (44.03993165651584, 15.565573237582054), where a gravel track branches off from the asphalt road; it will take you some 800 m along it to the fortress. If you are in a hurry, you can drive right up to just behind the fortress.

On the widened area behind the fortress a small picnic spot has been laid out, with a few benches and info boards. During our visit some group was just getting a barbecue ready. The place is ideal for outings, and the pine forest that surrounds the whole site provides plenty of shade.

On the south and east side of the fortress there is a small canyon at the bottom of which flows the little Kličevica river. There is an easy trail down to the spot where the remains of an old mill stand. The canyon and the rapids at its bottom really are a surprise that we did not expect!

Through the forest behind the fortress there are several trails. One of them, to the east, leads to a large railway bridge, and the small stone bridge behind it is a real gem of architecture.

The visit can be planned as a circular trail, which we always prefer to returning by the way we came.
