On the south-western slopes of the Kalnik hills you will come upon a very interesting landscape. Gently rolling, dotted with beautiful meadows, small woods and ploughed fields, it is one of the loveliest in Croatia.

You would think that before the age of cars and mobile phones the idyll here was even greater. Perhaps it once was, but for centuries this region was the scene of events that were anything but idyllic. This, after all, is where Croatia and Europe were defended against the Turkish invasions!

In the middle of this beautiful countryside, on one of those idyllic hills, sits the fortress of Čanjevo.

Čanjevo fortress was part of a defensive system covering the wider area of the southern part of Varaždin County. It dates from somewhere in the 15th century. In a resolution of the Croatian-Slavonian Parliament from 1557 it is mentioned as a castrum at Čanjevo (castri Chanyo).

The fortress garrison was made up of haramije, Croatian border troops. The haramije go back to 1539, when they were founded as a military formation to guard against Ottoman incursions. After the defensive system of the Banska krajina (the Ban’s Military Frontier) was organised, they became an integral part of it. The units numbered around fifty soldiers, commanded by a vojvoda or a harambaša. The name haramije was often applied as well to the non-professional members of the Slavonian people’s militia charged with guarding the frontier. Their role came to an end in the 18th century, when the frontier regiments were established.

In the 16th century the garrison of haramije at Čanjevo was commanded by the owner of the estate, a member of the Praškoci family, and for that reason they are also known as the Praškoci haramije.

The fortress never fell under Turkish rule, and in honour of that heroic defence against the Ottomans a re-enactment of the battle against the Turkish invaders has been staged each October for the last twenty years or so – “The Battle for Čanjevo”. It is organised by the Municipality of Visoko and the Praškoci Haramije Association.

You can drive right up to the fortress, but our advice is to leave the car somewhere after the turn-off from the asphalt road and carry on from there on foot.
