The Šokot stream and waterfall
An hour’s drive from Zagreb, on the southern slopes of Kalnik mountain, you will find a genuine little oasis. The area of the Šokot stream and the waterfall of the same name is marked by a distinctive relief and particular microclimatic conditions. Because of those features the area abounds in plant and animal species, and it is of exceptional geological importance.

A walking trail was laid out along the stream in 2008. If we disregard a couple of overgrown benches, we found the trail in fairly good condition. The route can partly be made into a loop, and that is the planned version we have put on the site. We did not walk it, so take the information with a pinch of salt. Since it was already quite hot despite the lush vegetation, we decided to improvise and go through the stream bed itself, for as long as that was possible. A parallel trail clearly runs through the bed, because we came across waymarks, and it is drawn on the maps as well. Passing through the bed is probably not possible when the water is higher, and care is needed in any case, because the rocks can be slippery.
As for parking, most of the information online mentions the start of the trail by the church in the centre of Gornja Rijeka 46.11007387779842, 16.39131415806142. We nevertheless decided to leave the car in an improvised pull-out on the other side, by the main road.
Although one part of the site lies in Varaždin County (Sudovec), the larger part is in Koprivnica-Križevci County and belongs to Gornja Rijeka. If you are on your way to Kalnik, be sure to stop by the Šokot stream and waterfall.

Special
Although our focus is on Croatia, due to great interest in reviewing some international locations from our travels, we decided to launch the Special section. In it, we will not cover locations in the same detailed way we do with Croatian ones, but will instead provide a brief overview of multiple locations grouped into meaningful categories. The only criterion we still strictly follow is that they must be natural attractions.
