Source of the Krupa River

The source of the Krupa is different from the others. We have visited dozens of river sources, and they are mostly located either in caves or in the depths of the lakes they form. The Krupa springs up on a slope from a cluster of rocks, creating a sight we had never seen before.

The source is located near the hamlet of Mandići, and to reach it you drive by car through areas that have remained trapped in another time. People here are engaged in livestock farming, so it is not unusual to get your car stuck in a flock of sheep or a herd of cattle. The children, and we adults too, always look forward to such encounters!

We often pass through other livestock-farming areas as well, but here the feeling of time dilation is special.

The river Krupa is beautiful, by the way. After a short course it flows into the Zrmanja. On the internet it says that it is 7 km long, but we measured 11.

You can leave the car at the widening by the chapel, and to reach the start of the walking trail, head towards the old watermill located by the bridge. The trail starts immediately on the right after you cross the bridge.

The trail is flat and easy, 500 m long, just enough to be able to say that you have had a walk. The whole time it runs along the course of the river, and it is interesting to see how, since ancient times, people have tried to tame the river for their needs with various channels and barriers.

If you absolutely must get as close to the source as possible by car, you can manage that too via a gravel road that brings you to this point 44.19707290315145, 15.90865416165179. Then all that remains is a descent of some 20 metres to the source. The walking trail along the river mentioned earlier is certainly the nicer option, so we recommend it.
