Why “Stiniva on Vis”? Because there is more than one Stiniva. For example, on the island of Hvar, there are Velika and Mala Stiniva.

Stiniva is, alongside Zlatni Rat, our most recognizable beach. As soon as you see their photographs, you know both the name and the location. Through social media, the phenomenon has crossed our borders, and many foreign tourists come to Croatia specifically because of these beaches. The famous “Brelan Stone” is a trademark of the entire town of Brela, not just one beach, so for that reason, it couldn’t be included in this specific company.

Stiniva is often placed on lists of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Whether it truly impressed us enough to rank it among our Top X beaches, find out in our short review.

Does Stiniva live up to the title of one of the world’s most beautiful beaches?

Stiniva is a special place. A beach embraced by cliffs is certainly not a common sight, and everyone should experience it in person!

Stiniva na Visu

Stiniva is not a large beach. It is just over 40 m long, so it fills up easily in the summer. However, despite the occasional crowds, it was very pleasant for us to spend the entire morning there!

At first, you just “soak in” the environment. Where are we? 🙂 After some time, you get used to the surroundings, but as you swim toward the exit of the stone “amphitheater,” new perspectives and views of the cliffs and semi-caves open up to you.

By simply changing the viewing angle slightly, you discover new and special details.

It is about 20 m to the exit of the “amphitheater.” However, that is only the deepest part of the cove. The entire bay is almost 600 m deep.

About 100 m from the beach, buoys are set up to mark the boundary beyond which the boats are located. In high season, there is a significant crowd of all kinds of vessels here.

A rope has been pulled from the buoys to the beach. The rope is used for pulling, and small dinghies operate along it.

This is an excellent solution for everyone who wants to reach the beach but, for some reason, doesn’t want to get wet. However, you cannot truly experience Stiniva without swimming and diving. Here, in the depths toward the buoys, we saw a special shade of blue. We haven’t seen a sea like that before, nor were we able to capture it in a photograph.

Stiniva na Visu

In the left part of the bay (looking from the beach), inside the “amphitheater,” the sea is extremely cold! This is where underwater freshwater springs (vrulje) are located. We didn’t know about them beforehand, so it was a surprise.

The beach cannot boast of pebbles that are pleasant for walking. These are slightly larger cobbles, so those with sensitive feet will prefer wearing footwear.

The beach is marred by catering facilities. We understand that there were old storage units for fishing gear here, which have now been converted into a restaurant and a café, but the covered terrace (štekat) in the middle of the beach is a bit too much for our taste. It’s the first thing that catches your eye when approaching the beach from the sea, and it significantly degraded the experience of it as a unique, wild place. Yes, it’s pleasant to sit under an awning and drink your favorite beverage, but this isn’t the place for something like that.

Stiniva na Visu
As if the terraces weren’t enough, there’s an outdoor seating area right in the middle of the beach!

In high season, there are large crowds here because Stiniva is a stop on many boat tours. Tourists arrive in waves, so when a larger group leaves, the beach seems half-empty, but it isn’t.

Conclusion

Stiniva is a unique place that everyone should experience at least once. We enjoyed being part of that place and discovering its hidden corners, from the freshwater springs and caves to the uniquely colored sea. However, if I were choosing a beach based on criteria important to me (fine pebbles, fewer crowds, etc.), I know at least twenty beaches that would rank ahead of Stiniva. But, if I were placing Stiniva on a list of the greatest natural attractions in Croatia, it would certainly be in the “Top 10.”

How to get to Stiniva?

Stiniva na Visu

Stiniva can be reached in two waysby sea and by a trail that descends from a height of over 100 m.

Stiniva na Visu

Many characterize the trail as difficult, steep, and slippery. If you have never stepped off the asphalt or if you head down in flip-flops, you will likely find the trail difficult. Especially if you are climbing back up under the scorching sun in the middle of summer.

The trail is slightly steeper in parts and requires holding on with your hands (in maybe two places), but it shouldn’t pose any problem for an average person in sports shoes. Some even descend it with air mattresses, so even that isn’t impossible.

In several places, the stone is quite polished and slippery, and in some spots, the surface crumbles slightly, so caution is definitely necessary, and closed sports shoes are recommended.

The trail is wide and well-trodden enough that it’s hard to get lost, although in a few places it branches into goat paths and detours.

It took us 20 minutes for the descent and 15 minutes for the ascent back to the parking lot.

People usually cite more time for the ascent, but fitness isn’t an issue for us. We had to be more careful during the descent, and we often stopped for photography.

The start of the trail is located right next to the parking lot and is clearly marked with signs.

Besides the old parking area along the road, which fits 5-6 cars, a fairly large parking lot has been built on the lower side of the road. It should fit at least 20 cars. We saw the construction preparations for a ramp and a payment machine that hadn’t been installed yet (summer 2025), but they will surely be ready for the next season.
