Sokol Grad – the best-maintained fortress in Croatia

So far, we have visited dozens of fortresses across Croatia, and Sokol Grad is the best-maintained and most interesting of them all. The fortress is under the jurisdiction of the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities, just like the Dubrovnik and Ston walls. We have yet to see a site restored with so much love and attention to detail.
The first thing that sets Sokol Grad apart from all other fortresses is that every corner of the fortification is effectively utilized. All buildings within the fortress have a museum display consistent with their original purpose. This museum setup is executed in a very high-quality and creative way. The graphics that complement it and the design of all information content are extremely professional and at a high artistic level. The lighting, the soundscapes… The soundscape even extends outside the buildings, so you have outdoor content accompanied by contextual audio. The job was done with restraint, so nothing is intrusive or over-the-top, which can often be the case in such situations.

The next thing that catches the eye is that literally every corner of Sokol Grad is accessible to visitors! Often in other fortresses, some parts are locked, cordoned off, or otherwise inaccessible. That is not the case here. In fact, we haven’t seen anywhere else (even abroad) where even the tops of the walls are accessible! Thus, you can literally walk along the top of the walls to reach prominent positions offering fantastic views of the Konavle region, feeling extremely safe at every moment. In these sections, you can see how modern materials are well-integrated with the old. The railings securing you are not wooden, as one might expect, but very modern metal in an anthracite color.

Dedication to detail is also seen in the drainage system, where the floor grate in front of the fortress entrance is carved directly into a stone slab. Some details subtly flirt with humor, such as the knight and maiden icons on the restroom signs. With things like this, it’s easy to overdo it and cross the line into kitsch, but here it was done with style and measure.
We won’t spend many words on the history of Sokol Grad; anyone interested can learn everything during their visit. We will only emphasize that this is the most important fortress in southern Croatia, which defended the southeastern borders of the Dubrovnik Republic. And just as the Ston walls protected a vital resource—salt—Sokol Grad protected the mills on the Ljuta river, from which Dubrovnik was supplied with flour.
We have always admired Dubrovnik and what it represents. Sokol Grad is just another confirmation of their shrewdness and brilliant organization, through which such a small community managed to survive and rise to a commercial superpower of its time in such an exposed area, surrounded by thousand-year-old threats from militarily and logistically much larger enemies. That is why the superficiality of tourists, especially foreigners, who perceive Dubrovnik as a mere movie set and not as a supreme world phenomenon on countless levels, can be frustrating.

Specijal
